Leave-in detangling mist, 200ml
A light leave-in spray to work through a dry coat before you brush it, the same idea as a leave-in conditioner for hair. Most owners of longer-coated dogs are missing exactly this.

A thick beeswax and oil balm for pads that have had too much hot pavement, or noses that have had too much Subiaco sun.

The black paddle brush we keep on the table. Firm pins, a cushioned base and a handle wide enough to hold properly, which is most of the battle with a long coat.

Steel finishing comb
Half fine, half coarse, solid steel. If this comb runs from skin to tip without catching, your dog is genuinely brushed. If it does not, the paddle brush has been lying to you.

Undercoat rake
For double coats only. Rounded rotating teeth that pull the dead undercoat out without cutting the guard hairs, which is the difference between de-shedding and damage.

Getting it right at home
A steel comb tells the truth
If the steel finishing comb runs from skin to tip without catching, the coat is genuinely brushed. If it does not, the paddle brush has been lying to you, and the next full groom will cost more in de-matting time than a fortnight of proper brushing would have.
